For New Zealand’s Prime Minster to be talking such nonsense – in fact, such a complete untruth as ‘bold action on climate change is a matter of life and death’ – is more than ominous. Her obvious preference for calling urgency on endorsing the recent recommendations of the Climate Change Commission is completely unacceptable. Its unbalanced findings verge on the fanatical and it is high time Ardern is called to account for the fear-mongering she is spreading and for promoting policies which would in fact basically destroy our economy.

Grist to her mill is that the anti-carbon Left is pushing the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in relation to pre-industrial temperatures. As has been pointed out, this is incompatible with the growing worldwide population, requiring a total reorganisation of the global economy that would keep billions in poverty. But our hard-left Prime Minister is publicly committed to it.

What is she doing?

Why? She must be very well aware that policies have consequences – so why is she so dramatically advocating what would be a self-inflicted wound on New Zealand? There is no evidence whatsoever that we are faced with any life or death decision with regard to climate change – except the one she is not highlighting: that adopting its extreme and unnecessary recommendations would economically cripple us as a country.

So what is she up to? She must know very well that given our size, in comparison with major producers of carbon dioxide, what we might achieve would not make one shred of difference to the total global CO2 emissions. She is treating New Zealanders as fools by maintaining this fiction. Russia, for example, is reportedly spending over $10 billion to boost its coal exports. Major producers in China, India, Australia, Russia and South Africa are apparently promoting mining projects to increase global output by 30 per cent. China is constructing over one hundred new coal mines, as well as developing shale oil deposits.

Ardern, apparently, is making obeisance to the extremist propaganda advanced by the far Left. However, New Zealanders are gradually realising that the guerrilla tactics of communism have long been undermining our country. Given her hard-core, leftist agenda – and a strong body of dedicated, socialist comrades in her Labour coalition – extraordinary moves are now being made to destroy our democracy, largely unchallenged by a lacklustre National party opposition.

By fanning the flames of concern over the supposedly catastrophic consequences of climate change – giving it cargo cult status – an extraordinarily useful tool is at hand, particularly given the prophesying of impending calamities by our helpful, now government-paid media. Stuff, one of our two major media organisations, has, to its disgrace, consistently refused to allow any dissenting points of view to be published, no matter how well-qualified the dissenting scientists, how well-proven the facts.

Damagingly uninformed

Facts? The majority of policymakers and politicians are damagingly uninformed about the findings of the hundreds of scientists in related fields, many with world-renowned reputations. Some, themselves serving as expert reviewers for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have pointed out that the IPCC has been hijacking science for ideological ends and have shown that hard evidence for a ‘climate emergency’ doesn’t hold up. In other words, the Left’s policy-makers’ agenda is to destroy the West’s economic and social ecology, but so successful has been the propaganda that an obsession with an impending global warming climate change catastrophe is now prevalent.

While some scientists are now on record as reversing their former adherence to the global warming cult, other prominent past and present New Zealand and Australian scientists such as Professor Bob Carter, Dr Vincent Gray, Dr Gerrit van der Lingen and Dr Chris de Freitas are among the stellar lists of dissenting scientists worldwide. Richard Lindzen, for example, formerly Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, author of over 200 papers on meteorology and climatology and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, has consistently drawn attention to the fact that man-made global warming theory is a sham and a scam. He argues that believing climate change is largely caused by increases in carbon dioxide is ‘pretty close to believing in magic’.

Dr David Kear, a former director-general of New Zealand’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) would have been considered one of New Zealand’s top scientists. Publishing on sea levels since the 1950s, he wrote in a 2013 booklet on the corrupted science behind the claims of the global warming narrative, of rising sea levels and of ‘the demonisation’ of the ‘essential and innocent gas, carbon dioxide’, pointing out how councils ‘are making zoning and other decisions purely to satisfy an agenda from above’.

Inflicting shocking damage

The truly shocking aspect of the Climate Change Commission’s recommendations to government on how to limit New Zealand’s greenhouse gases is the damage they would inflict upon this country. Its role was apparently originally envisaged to take politics out of the climate change debate. It has done nothing of the sort and, instead, launched an attack on our freedoms. It would give the government unprecedented, basically fascist, control over the cars we drive and import, our energy sources and our housing and agriculture. It also recommends reducing the number of farm animals and replacing productive farmland with still more pine tree plantings.

Not only is our set 2050 target of net zero emissions entirely unnecessary, its totally unrealistic recommendations such as prioritising re-cycling are impracticable – and almost risible.

Predictably, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research is thoroughly locked into the doomsday scenario, and regards the Commission’s recommendations with enthusiasm. Naturally, iwi (those of Maori descent), are to be expected to have a stronger involvement in these changes.

Wake up

We should make no mistake: the government’s Emissions Reduction Plan, due by 31 December, is meat and drink to our now totally compromised, hard-left Labour coalition.

The way ahead is now fraught indeed – unless that sleeping giant, the public, properly wakes up.

Already, there are indications this is happening.

    Ecellent article!
Our Pime Minister, when talking about climate, regurgitates Marxist-derived ideas that are not only nonsense on a stick, but blatantly lack any scientific credibility whatsoever. I suspect she hates everyting that is regarded as normal in New Zealand.
I have been waiting for many years to see proof that CO2 is anything other than a trace gas in our atmosphere that is essential for not just plant life but ALL life on the planet we call home.
The woman is a demented ideologue and should be put out of power and kept away from her bully pulpit for the good of humanity.

The late Professor Chris De Freitas once said: “There is evidence of global warming. The climate has warmed about 0.6 °C in the past 100 years, but most of that warming occurred prior to 1940, before the post WW II industrialisation that led to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. But warming does not confirm that CO2 is causing it. Climate is always warming or cooling. There are natural variability theories of warming.”
it is a shame that the “Carbon Cycle” isn’t taught in schools instead of the propaganda that has permeated into the primary school curriculum! If more people were conversant with it, more would understand that most of the CO2 & CH4 are cyclic and not causative factors of CC at all & maybe we wouldn’t have the lies & deceit from the PM who said: “bold action on climate change is a matter of life & death”. That statement is preposterous in its ignorance! It is this sort of propaganda that I want to protect our children & grandchildren from as there is no foundation of truth in it. I don’t ever want our children to be indoctrinated with the lies & deceit that this Govt perpetuate & want to teach in schools!
I too want a future for our Grandchildren but I don’t want ½ the earth torn up to satisfy the demand for cobalt & lithium to manufacture plastic encased batteries to run EVs that we are now subsidising. I hope those who own an EV will think of the global pollution or the child labour in the Congo that helped mine the necessary minerals? That is not a world I want to see my grandchildren grow up in!
So, by all means let’s better manage factory emissions if we have to, but an EV is not an answer for a multitude of reasons nor will they make one iota of difference to mitigating the forever natural, changing climate – all it will do is make people feel good but now at farmers’ expense (tax)!

O.K. this comment was started as a response to the post on “digital passports”, and put on hold but probably relevant to the current direction of our governing elite……

“If digital airline passports become mandatory we may just decide to stay at home and fly NOWHERE”

Might be time to back-up just a wee bit:
Yes, the incremental inconveniences will be less comfortable.
Yes, they demonstrate steadily increased ability to control the population.
    So what ?
    So: What are the alternatives?
Will I be “free” at home ?
Where will I go to be free?
Will I go to a subsistence lifestyle? (which appears to be the direction pushed onto us by the CAGW elite. ) (CAGW=Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming……a.k.a. also known as ‘climate change’ )
I have watched a little of subsistence community from a comfortable distance:
    Very hard work.
No: Extremely hard work. The tough fighters (both women and men) usually survive; infant mortality is high: like 60% to 80%; Old age is a luxury beyond 44 years age. What I eat is what sunshine has been captured by basic starchy plants, within the safe area of the land my family (and a vey few friends) can defend by intimidation and all-out battle. Utu / payback builds up over generations. Just over the hill/river/ocean are unknown presumed fierce enemies just like me. I dare not go over there without extreme need, they must not pass through my land in case they want to stay and kick me off. Then again, they could be tasty, just as I am tasty. Any incremental advantage is life-or-death valuable; including those from dimensions five to ten. Technology is an advantage, and technology is expensive. The sooner I can get out of this (utopian? )stone age, the better.

By all means, kangaroo, stay home: “and fly NOWHERE”
“NOWHERE” is not always going to be a comfortable place to stay, it may not even be a safe place.
What happens when there are no safer places left to run to ?
Someone, somewhere, eats kangaroo when they are hungry enough.
How about an early decision to cut-the-losses and move out NOW ? How do we even make such a decision? Maybe we could learn from the individuals running for a new life in the U.S.A. or Europe, or Oz.
In any case….move out to where ?

What could be useful is an outside opinion.
Preferably with more “real” intelligence than something based on random chance which has purportedly originated as pond-weed and now become a “philosopher”, who still has as much self-interest as any other bit of pond-weed out there. Yes, that’s me too.
    Preferably a benevolent opinion.
Preferably from outside the dimensions of length, width, height, and time.
Preferably which also helps validate and make coherent everything else we “know”.

Well, whaddaya know? It is called the Bible. Part five of a seven-part message system which has its origins outside our four measurable dimensions. (come to think of it, may be other than a seven-part message; I need some help on that one ).

    So what is my point?
In my limited recall: Some (or most?) of the atrocities done by regimes have been legalised by a progressive change of laws; allowing once-unthinkable harm to be done by everyday people as part of their everyday jobs. Probably with the extra motivation of peer-pressure, hunger-control, blackmail, and penalty-of-association.
Somewhere on the incremental slide, each everyday person had choices as to whether to comply with the pressure or to resist and choose a different path; most likely the penalty for non-compliance increased at each point of choice.
Only with an outside perspective and with an absolute definition of what is right or wrong from the outside source (yes, God, as in the God described in the bible) can the everyday person keep making ‘good’ decisions because their valuation of the alternatives (presented by the choice at hand) is coherent with what is real.

To the choice at hand: accepting another layer of state control; Comply…… or be ostracised and less easy to get on with living. Do we actually expect to travel frequently where the passports are being checked ? How could we possibly make a significant difference to the governmental decisions here? As I understand it, the control level in the U.K. has already progressed to CoV Passport requirements at football stadiums, music concerts, and local pubs.
Look at what has happened to payment by cheques recently; their removal is totally for the convenience and profitability of the Banks. Soon enough I expect it will be the removal of payments by cash, also to be excused by State ability to track criminal activity, and to remove the costs of cash handling.
Then all it takes is for the list of ‘criminals’ to progressively include dissidents, journalists, fundamentalists, gangs, and churches. Meanwhile the real criminals already have effective electronic money laundering.
Just a few years ago I was criminalised overnight by changing the list of prohibited firearms; a few years after the removal of lifetime licencing. Meanwhile the police armouries quietly upgraded from bolt action .222 to a combination of bolt .308 and semi-automatic .223 as frequently now visible on the streets when they patrol ( well after ) a violent event.
Soon the copper telephone lines will be cut off and all will be expected to quietly purchase a ‘smart’ ‘phone and pay for the broadband connection just so they can receive their wages (Social Credits ? ) and make their payments, and bleat their location constantly. Removal of the excuse to not have a ‘smart’ ‘phone is a useful bonus.
    Welcome to the incremental slide.
This month it is the theft from buyers of new ( and therefore also second-hand) vehicles with internal combustion engines, to be paid out to the suppliers of electric powered vehicles (which can / have jumped in price accordingly….surprise, surprise, surprise…NOT ) Just when I wanted to get a 4WD able to haul a loaded tandem trailer at least 600 km in a day, to replace our tired ’98 Toyota camry. Sigh.

No, I do not have a simple answer; The choices never get easier.
What I am convinced of is that from an eternal perspective, the real ‘me’ can be free, separately from these four measurable dimensions. The world is going to get a whole lot more painful before there is improvement; Our walnut trees have at least a thousand years to be productive, and what really matters is my status relative to God who created me.
    Shalom.
    Walnutter

Taking ‘bold action for climate change’ in NZ includes closing down our use of coal as an energy source. Here is an example of energy realism versus climate dogma.

In the first 4 days of July, according to the Transpower live data, there was minimal wind power generated. At 6.30pm on 3 July for example , there was only 75 MW wind versus 1,535 MW gas/coal input from a total of just over 6,100 MW being generated. We were down to 73% renewable generation, compared to our commonly stated 84% renewable NZ system.

We have some 600 wind turbines operating in NZ, but even if we had 6000, like similar size population Denmark, we would only have generated 750 MW from wind during each of those 4 days, still only half of the gas/coal backup input. So, has the maths been done to show that backup by either battery or proposed pumped hydro at Lake Onslow would cope for whole days in a row like this, if we dismantled Huntly coal/gas station as is suggested?

As I composed this, a recent Guardian news item stated that 5 major Asian countries plan to build more than 600 coal power units. Interesting?

Sometime ago I read an interesting quote. It was attributed to G. Michael Hopf, an ex US Marine and now described as a best selling apocalyptic author. Whether it is his work or not, I have paraphrased a little, as it seemed a good fit for the sate of things at the moment.

Tough times produce tough people and tough leaders.
Tough leaders and tough people lead us to easy times.
Easy times produce weak people and weak leaders.
Weak leaders and weak people lead us to tough times.

I think we can be reasonably certain we are in the weak leaders, weak people phase of this cycle. It is not so much that they are not passionate about their particular political or social causes. Far from it. They appear tough and determined and are strong in their promotion and defense of their doctrines. Unfortunately this energy and passion is directed at pushing weak philosophies and feeble minded ideologies. It leads to safe spaces, trigger words, cancel culture and snowflakes. These extreme left leaning morons are generally younger and have no real grasp of history because they are badly educated and easily lead. None of them, for instance, understand that both the Nazis and Fascists started out as socialist organizations. That the brown shirts and black shirts from these organizations were sent en masse to shout down and shut up any one and any meeting that disagreed with their ideals. The 1930’s equivalent of modern cancel culture. Yet, because these people do not know their history, they are repeating the same mistakes, with no idea of where it will lead until they get there and discover that they are in an authoritarian hell of their own making. It leads us to situations where we are looking down the barrel of Jacinda Ardern’s hate speech laws. If these are passed they will see me getting a slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket for smashing someone in the face, after all the prisons are overcrowded as it is and don’t need any more inmates, but a possible 3 year jail sentence for calling some one a ginger minger. Jacinda Ardern is not just a traitor to New Zealand on the grounds of climate change. As with most self confessed progressive, the Prime Minister deliberately obfuscates the real intentions with nebulous and meaningless sound bites that, taken in isolation, make her sound good. But make no mistake, when she said that New Zealanders should consider the government as the only source of truth, she was not only talking about the Covid vaccine. We only have to look at the current proposed education reforms and the revisionist history that will be taught in our schools. After all, who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past. Ministry of Truth anyone?
I am just grateful that I have lived most of my life were I have had freedom of movement, to go just about anywhere I liked when I wanted, a freedom afforded often by the disgusting infernal combustion engine. Freedom of speech, not to incite violence, but to express an opinion. I recently listened to an ex policeman from the UK. In a series of tweets, there was some back and forth opinions with some friends on matters relating to transgender and gay people. Nothing nasty, nothing inflammatory. Yet he still got a visit from the local police to check his “thinking”. Thought police coming to New Zealand soon anyone? What would sum up Jacinda Ardern’s legacy if we are not very vigilant? “Look on my works ye mighty and despair.”
