We don’t trust the media

Surprised?

MediaRoom: The latest findings on the public’s trust in NZ news make confronting reading, Plus RNZ rides high in new online audience numbers and Discovery starts cutting staff at Three

Less than half the New Zealand public now professes ‘overall trust’ in news media outlets, despite big rises in audience numbers during the Covid-19 pandemic and economic crisis.

The 2021 Trust in News in New Zealand survey released early on Thursday found the level of overall trust falling from 53 percent in 2020 to 48 percent in 2021 and trust in the news sources used by respondents themselves falling by 7 points from 62 percent to 55 percent.

The drops in NZ mirrored international research findings in the Reuters Digital News Report 2020, which put trust in media at the lowest level since it began seeking such data in 2016. But our overall trust figure at 48 percent remains high compared to the international average of 38 percent.

The local survey of 1200 people, run online nationwide by Horizon Research in March on behalf of AUT’s research centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy found all news brands here experienced erosion in trust over the 12 months, with Newshub and Newstalk ZB suffering ‘statistically significant’ falls …

About 50 years ago, as an exercise for a Sociology 101 class at Massey University, the tutor group I was part of undertook a survey of news media available to us to ascertain the factual content of ‘news’ items.
Our group’s results were quite startling; only 15% of so-called news was based in fact, the balance was either the commenter’s opinion or conjecture from an unknown or uncredited source.
I am sure the situation has not improved ove the years.

Hi Andy. Welcome back, hope you’re well.

Thanks for this. Resembles the egregious bits of wokeness that cloud our news these days like flies on a window. I don’t know where to start untangling the lies or the flies, but I know where to finish: I believe in a bit of climate change, but a climate crisis is incredible.

There’s solid evidence emerging that models are not predicting the temperature, CO2 is irrelevant in warming the earth but important in cooling, the most important atmospheric coolant and its most significant absorber of energy is water and its vapour, the temperature hasn’t been going up, and the IPCC lies to us. Anyway, despite all this, people and nations around the world are just refusing to pay the eye-watering sums asked of us to “fix” climate change.

I’ve grown to be hopeful the whole charade will shortly grind to a halt, though it’ll no doubt leave behind all kinds of anomalous superstitions about the atmosphere, climate and sea levels that could persist for hundreds of years.
