NZ sideswipes the UN migrant crusade

The United Nations was formed in 1945. The speeches must have been less than rivetting, and the candid body language on display makes a fascinating study. Click to enlarge and pass a little time exploring.

Our favourite Canadian commentator Donna Laframboise credits New Zealand with  compounding the UN’s year-end climate and migration gloom.

If you’re a UN bureaucrat, recent weeks have been full of disappointment.

She catalogues a series of international rebuffs and setbacks that have bedevilled the UN, including the riots in France, Poland’s proud stand for its coal industry, Brazil’s post-election refusal to host next year’s climate conference, the refusal of four nations to welcome the IPCC’s shamelessly alarmist climate report and 29 nations resiling from the UN’s controversial migration compact, and other matters.

Then she singles out New Zealand for its prolonged reluctance to sign up to the migration compact before its last-minute acceptance.

If you’re a UN bureaucrat, this is quite a run of disappointment, annoyance, and misfortune. But the icing on this Christmas fruitcake comes from New Zealand. Its government is currently headed by Jacinda Ardern, a 38-year-old former president of the International Union of Socialist Youth. It’s a little known fact that New Zealand didn’t sign on in Morocco, either. A week ago, clearly playing for time, Ardern dismissed the Moroccan event as “purely ceremonial.”

Though I’ve no time to check the details, Donna’s post is an interesting coda on our part in the saga. I encourage you to read it and let me know your thoughts about Winston’s decisions on our behalf.

PS: I’m under no illusion that our reluctance to sign might signal Kiwi doubts about the wisdom of obeying the UN.

    We signed it..

and at the bottom of Donna Laframboise post it states

As this post goes to press, New Zealand’s decision to support the Migration Pact has just been announced. Media coverage is emphasizing legal advice received by the government, which reportedly concluded that New Zealand’s sovereignty won’t be adversely affected.

Remember, though, that close neighbour and ally Australia took the opposite position. How this will affect Aussie-Kiwi relations remains to be seen.

    Maggy,

Yes, we signed it, and my apologies if that was ambiguous. My reference to “its last-minute acceptance” was rather vague.

Winston Peters has spent most of his political career dog-whistling about immigration. Now he signs this pact and dismisses any detractors as “Alt Right”

We are in the grips of a far-left government. Luckily it is only three years of damage, as huge as that may be.

In a similar vein, perhaps after a million “refugees” bypass Australia and are welcomed to NZ, maybe like France there will be a groundswell of concern.

But I digress to the political rather than the science….
