I’ve been sent some emails from people connected with the IPCC review process. The First Order Draft of the WGI contribution to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis is available for Expert Review from 16 December 2011 to 10 February 2012.
The WGI Bureau invites all experts with expertise and/or publications in the specific areas covered by the WGI Report to assist in the IPCC assessment process by registering to review here.
I have to say that it’s strange that the web site for this professional organisation, which is meant to be secured by encryption certificates, isn’t set up correctly and makes Firefox think the site is being spoofed. It appears quite amateurish.
Also, I wonder why they chose the Christmas/New Year period to distribute the draft and recruit reviewers?

Thank you for your interest in the Working Group I contribution of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis.
The Expert Review of the WGI AR5 First Order Draft has begun on 16 December 2011 and will end on 10 February 2012. Experts interested in participating in this review have to go through an online registration process accessible under https://fod.ipcc.unibe.ch/registration/.
The FOD review is an open expert review. We aim for a wide circulation and broad expert participation and would therefore appreciate receiving your comments.
Once you have successfully completed the registration you will receive, within a day or two, an email from the WGI Technical Support Unit (TSU) with access details and an individual username and password pair. Usernames and passwords are specific to each expert and may not be shared. Additional instructions regarding the review will also be provided at that time.

Comments from an aspiring reviewer
They are taking extreme precautions to try to discourage genuine comments. You are expected to choose only one Chapter and to list relevant publications.
It is being conducted in an atmosphere of strict secrecy, hoping to catch people on the Christmas period and suppress all dissent.
I have yet to receive my draft, which I understand has frightening levels of secrecy.
I originally wrote to the address mentioned and it bounced.
I strongly urge any of you who feel as strongly on this matter as I do to fill in their registration form as soon as possible and to plumb the depths of the registration procedure for the WGII and WGIII parts of the report as well as WGI.
They must not be allowed to get away with it.
Indeed. Real scientists would agree. If “they” are trying to “get away” with anything at all, “they” should not be allowed to.

Why do I have a strange feeling of deja vu? It is reminiscent of Phil Jones writing that he would not release information to someone he thought was intending to attack his conclusions! Still, I suppose all is permissible in defense of “the cause”.

The site just has an invalid or non-existent certificate that is required for the https protocol, hence the warnings that you get on Firefox etc.
It doesn’t surprise me that this would happen given the standard of IT we saw in the climategate emails.
