18 Thoughts on “This week’s tip

The key question is, of course, which sections of the societies have lost their minds?

As for Britain, we do live in somewhat surreal times, drifting towards the cliff of a hard Brexit.

Is France still on the “must visit” list? I heard it’s a great time to take to the streets in a Yellow Vest and burn some cars. The police have been issued with semi-automatic weapons with live rounds and last week shot a guy in the head.

Yet somehow Britain and the USA are off limits… Because… Orange Man Bad?

    Andy,

Choose as seems best to you, but keep away for a while.

Is France still on the “must visit” list?

France might be a problem, it’s just not mentioned in my tip. Optional. But it’s all optional. Very little is compulsory, but when you get used to that, we’ll add more. And more.

Visiting the UK is part of my job. It’s not pleasant. If it’s not Scots banging on about the effing English and effing Tories, it’s remainers banging on about the effing morons who voted Leave, or banging on about Orange Man Bad

There’s a lot of hatred and it’s palpable

This is why I generally don’t go out much and watch cat videos

  5. Richard Treadgold on 18/01/2019 at 10:38 am said:

That’s not at all nice. Here I was, thinking we were having a good bit of harmless banter and you go and say it’s real. Well. Orange Man Bad doesn’t refer to the gilets jaunes, it mocks Trump supporters. I’m not sure where to take it from here. Perhaps there’s hatred, but hatred is not new. Complaining isn’t new. Doing unpleasant jobs is not new. There is nothing new under the sun. I shall refrain from trivialising your complaint, for that would prolong it. Instead, I congratulate you on your honesty, your tenacity and your courage. Keep it up.

Well, we all know how toxic the climate debate has become. If you imagine that mindset taken to all levels of society, that is how I feel it has become

Maybe NZers are immune to it because most shelter behind the usual bullies in the media that present the “progressive” agenda as the only one

  7. Richard Treadgold on 18/01/2019 at 10:46 am said:

Wow, that is serious. But what do you mean by sheltering behind bullies? What is the progressive agenda? Are you saying we’re immune to UK events or something similar here?

I’m referring to the general public, not specifically those that read and write here.

But there is virtually no one I meet in real life who doesn’t support globalisation, thinks all Trump supporters are far right racists, and think all Brexiteers are far right oiks.

It’s different on the Internet of course

Basically I give up on any polite conversation these days and just keep my mouth shut wherever possible

  10. Andy on 18/01/2019 at 11:12 am said:

On the subject of Brexit, I have been following Dr Richard North (EUReferedum.com) and his son Pete for many years. They write knowledgeably about a very difficult subject – namely how to balance global trade with democracy and sovereignty

Some of you might know RN through his climate efforts in “Amazongate” and other issues, and he works closely with Christopher Booker

North came up with the very well thought out “Flexcit” plan for Britain to leave the EU.

Unfortunately, it has all been lost. We are left with a group of Europhiles screaming at a group of Hard brexiteers. There isn’t any nuance or discussion left.

This is what really irks me. It’s not that I am right and others are wrong. I don’t pretend to understand many issues (including climate change) . The issue is that there is no discussion in the public sphere, about almost anything of importance. The mob have taken over and it’s getting ugly

  11. Richard Treadgold on 18/01/2019 at 11:23 am said:

I see. Yes, we’re poorly served by the mainstream press, who keep us well insulated. I’ve not heard of Flexit nor his son Peter but I’ve read a little of Richard North. I should seek some more from him.

    Sad story Andy!

I’m probably fortunate in that most of my friends are old and have had a complete gutsful of contorted faces screaming ‘racist’, ‘sexist’, ‘bigot’, ‘mysogonist’, ‘homophobe’, ‘toxic male’, ‘rape culture’, ‘bully’, ‘harasser’, ‘xenophobe’, ‘nativist’, ‘islamophobe’, ‘white privilege’, ‘patriarchy’, etc, etc.

My kids and their friends wouldn’t dare to join this virtue-signalling chorus.

The core problem is that the paid media is going broke and are desperately under-staffed, so just follow along with what they are fed by the PR industry, which has meantime grown huge. The PR mob are like reef fish (as David Lange once pointed out) and dominated by young graduates. Anybody who has been at a university in the last decade is lost to the world of common sense.

As to Trump … most Americans I meet (and I spend a month or so in the USA each year) don’t LIKE him, but are convinced that he is a necessary evil. They are all praying for the ugly Washington hell-hole to implode.

Expect to find that ‘the cliff of a hard Brexit’ is largely a media creation. The Port of Calais authorities for example say they are ready for March 29th onwards and won’t cause new problems.

The EU countries are just as keen to trade with the UK as the UK is with them. Money talks.

Richard, humour sure helps. Andy you are keeping bad company (grin). Much of the populace eg all flyover country except the few marxist ageing hippies amongst us, is full of productive kind honest folk. Because they work with reality producing food and goods, or Engineering etc to make it happen. I meet like-minded folk travelling through, especially at the Pub and if they are flyover inhabitants too, we feel the same no matter what nationality. So despair not.
Tis true the Greens start their stalinist road of bones work here this year. But at least we have warnng this time. We also remain ruled by Common Law still, unlike so many lands. If we use our heads we can beat them.

The piles of climate lies now filling the air and print are signs of desperation as funding loss and coolng combine to foil them. Like desperate rats in a barrel. That should be worth a grim smile….

I work with engineering and science graduates and they all believe the official climate change narrative. They all hate Trump and
Brexit. They all hate the English and they all hate Christianity

    Pretty much non stop hate

I do have some friends who share much in common with me, but this is feeling more and more like a secret society these days

I recently read a short book called “conservatism” by British philosopher Roger Scruton

He is an eminently readable and reasonable man, who describes “conservatism”
in different cultures and different times. The USA has a distinct conservative movement (some of which turn their noses up at Trump style popularism, that’s their choice but like Barry days , he is a necessary evil)

Scruton, however, says that conservatism in the UK doesn’t exist as a real political force despite the incumbent party holding that title

Scruton describes himself as a “dissident” in 21st C Britain
